M.V.Millennium City, M.V.Millennium Dawn, M.V.Millennium of Peace and M.V.Millennium Time are collectively known as M2-class RiverLiners™.
These vessels, built at a total cost of £6m, provide
the backbone of our sightseeing service. Their design, specification
and fit-out are the result of more than five years of technical
studies, market research and development undertaken by City
Cruises. The initial result from this programme was our first
RiverLiner™, M.V.Millennium of London, which entered service in
1996. This was the first purpose-built sightseeing vessel
on the River Thames for 25 years and to mark the occasion
she was named by The Queen at Tower Pier. The design was refined in the light of operational experience
and strategic decisions on the future of passenger services
on the tidal Thames leading to the superb M2 class.
Design of the Vessel
The RiverLiners™ were designed by Eddie Woods of Anglia Design and built by Vosper Thornycroft UK at Woolston, Southampton. Whereas Millennium of London is a trimaran, the M2 series has twin hulls designed to offer low drag, a stable ride and low wash. Windows in the new boats are larger, contributing to a greater sense of light and space. The open top decks allow unrivalled views. The M2 class are currently the only boats on the tidal River Thames designed with accessibility in mind, the lower saloon, bars and toilets being fully accessible for wheelchair users.
Fuel
Like all City Cruises' fleet, the RiverLiners™ use ultra low sulphur diesel oil [ULSD], often known as "green diesel". This offers lower emissions [oxides and particulates] compared with conventional fuel. We adopted ULSD in 1999, following nine months of technical and commercial evaluation and are the first, and so far the only, operator to have made the change.
